When my son was five, we started an art project together. Placing my to-do book in front of him, he would quickly doodle abstract shapes, whirling lines, and outlines of strange creatures and superheroes (complete with speech bubbles and sound effects) over pages of dull errand lists.
When he was done, I would work into his raw, expressive lines—creating characters, adding details, shading, and backgrounds. If he had drawn a more fully formed character, I would develop scenes with groups of cartoon friends interacting with each other."
